During the class we will work on and further develop our shibori (think very advanced tie dye) skills by using various resist methods to achieve patterning on cloth. We will then explore the magic of indigo. This dye process will result in a beautiful and rich deep blue with patterning resulting from the use of resists (stictching, clamping, folding, etc).
Students will be provided with a silk scarf and a cotton bandanna as well as all other required materials. Students are welcome to bring a yard of fabric or T-shirt as well. Remember, only natural fibers please. Silk, cotton, rayon, bamboo, and linen work well. White base will result in blue and white. Red produces an almost black and red result. Let us all be the queens of what if this day!!! Remember to not wear anything you don’t want blue dots on or bring an apron (we have several aprons in the class room). Students also need to bring a pair of substantial rubber gloves (like the ones worn to do dishes and protect one’s manicure). If a student is comfortable with the shibori process, stitching cloth or a wearable ahead of time is great. Stitching is labor intensive and takes a lot of time and we only have one day.
